Does Your Photographer Direct People?
If there's one thing I've learned shooting weddings over the years, it's that a good photographer has to be specific, clear, concise, and fast. Directing people during the group portraits is so important. Make sure the photographer you hire notices little details and makes sure that everyone looks natural in their pictures. Having a portfolio full of beautifully artistic shots of rings, flowers, and dresses doesn't mean they know how to pose people or get them to laugh for real smiles.
Another thing to watch out for is a photographer who gets in the way during the ceremony. Fortunately for photographers, they don't need to use tripods or big equipment, and should quickly step in, get a shot, and then move back. Because videographers need to hold their camera up for long periods of time, inattentive photographers can often get in the way of the videographer, which is really disappointing when you're trying to watch your wedding video later on. Make sure the photographer you hire can either zoom in or is aware enough to move out of the way quickly after getting the shot, staying out of the videographer's way. They should be cognizant of everyone around and understand that the wedding is not only about the photos, but about the experience of everyone involved. A good photographer should also be called an "Invisible Photographer."
Lastly, make sure your photographer is on the same page as you in regards to where they can shoot and what they can and cannot do. Don't hire someone who doesn't have a good personality and gives you a hard time about this. They should be fun, easy to work with, and put you in a good mood when you meet them.
